We didn’t realize we were making memories. We just knew we were having fun.
Wie einige von meinen Lesern sicher wissen oder mitbekommen haben, habe ich das letzte halbe Jahr ein Auslandssemester in Groningen, den Niederlanden, gemacht. Auf meinem alten Blog habe ich währenddessen den ein oder anderen Beitrag hochgeladen mit Bildern und Eindrücken von meiner Zeit dort. Da ich ja jetzt auf diesen Blog umgezogen bin, wollte ich die Erinnerungen nicht missen und hier einfach nochmal ein wenig darüber erzählen und vor allem die schönsten Bilder und Erinnerungen mit euch teilen!
As some of you might know, I spent the last 5 months in Groningen, the Netherlands. While I lived in Groningen I published a few blog posts of the city and of some excursions I did on my old blog. Since I started a new blog, I don’t want to miss all the photos I took of the beautiful places I saw, so I decided to publish some of the photos to walk down memory lane and share a few memories with you guys.
Mittlerweile ist es bereits über ein Jahr her, als ich die Zusage für das ERASMUS – Auslandssemester bekam. Ich kann mich noch gut erinnern, wie die Vorbereitungen auf Hochtouren liefen und meine Vorfreude immer größer wurde, als es Ende August endlich losging. Für mich war das Auslandssemester der erste längere Aufenthalt außerhalb Deutschlands; eine andere Sprache, Kultur und neue Freunde. Natürlich wurde die Vorfreude erstmal ein wenig gedämmt in den ersten Tagen, weil so viele verschiedene Eindrücke, neue Leute und wichtige Erledigungen für Uni, etc. einen auch ganz schön erschlagen können.
About one year ago I applied for a semester abroad in the Netherlands and luckily I got accepted by my first choice. I still have strong memories of making arrangements and my increasing anticipation towards my departure. As they say: ‚The greatest pleasure lies in anticipation!‘ For me, the semester abroad was the first time out of Germany for a longer period than a normal vacation – speaking another language, living a different culture and meeting new people. Naturally, my excitement became a little less by the first days after my arrival, because sometimes first impressions and meeting a lot of new people can be a bit challenging for me. Furthermore, the first days were also full of important things about the university and all the documents that needed to get signed and stuff.
Aber glücklicherweise habe ich mich relativ schnell eingelebt und vor allem gefiel mir Groningen von Anfang an super gut! Das lag einerseits an der Vielzahl von Studenten und andererseits an den vielen lieben Menschen, die ich dort kennengelernt habe. Die Stadt bietet eigentlich alles was man braucht, ohne zu gross zu sein und vor allem das Nachtleben werde ich mehr als vermissen. Mittwochs, Freitags und Samstags ist der Viehmarkt gefüllt mit Käse -, Fleisch – und Blumenständen und der Grote Markt bietet an fast allen Tagen kleine Stände mit Taschen, Tüchern, etc.
Thankfully, I settled down fast! On the one hand thanks to the city itself, because I really liked it and on the other hand thanks to the nice people I met and lived with during my stay abroad. One of the best things about Groningen is, that students represent a huge part of the whole population and even more, there are a lot of international students from all over the world – studying there not only for one semester but also longer. The city offers everything you need without being a major city and I’m really going to miss the nightlife. Little pubs and cafes, bars with dance floors where you don’t have to pay massive admissions and cheap drinks nearly everywhere. On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays there’s a huge market in the city centre with a lot of booths with cheese, meat and flowers. Additionally, the Grote Markt has booths with bags, cloths and other stuff nearly every day.
In der Innenstadt gibt es diesen unglaublich schönen Garten ‚Prinsenhof‘, der zum Glück auch im Spätsommer noch extrem bunt und blütenreich war. An einem sonnigen Tag hab ich mich dann mit meinem Fahrrad und meiner Kamera auf den Weg gemacht, um dort ein paar Fotos zu schiessen. Fortbewegungsmittel Nummer eins ist in Groningen sowieso das Fahrrad, wie in den Niederlanden generell. Und ehrlich gesagt ist mir mein Fahrrad trotz einiger ereignisreicher Fahrten und ein paar wenigen Stürzen auch ans Herz gewachsen. Zum Schluss musste ich es leider kaputt zurücklassen, weil ich es geschafft habe in der vorletzten Nacht auf dem Rückweg von einer Party nochmal ordentlich hinzufallen 😀 So hatte ich immerhin noch ein paar Tage nach meiner Abreise ein paar Erinnerungen an die Zeit in Form von blauen Flecken.
Nearly in the middle of the city centre you can also find a beautiful garden, called ‚Prinsenhof‘, which is still blooming farraginous in late summer. On a sunny day in September I headed there, only with my camera and my bike, snapping the chance to take some photos of this beautiful place.
The No.1 means of transportation in Groningen is the bike – as all over the Netherlands. To be honest, in the end I really liked my bike and I didn’t like the fact that I couldn’t bring it back to Germany. Despite some eventful bike rides during the night and more or less little falls I really liked cycling, because it is so much faster and not as complicated as taking the bus. Typical of me, I managed to break my bike the second last night on our way back from a party, so I wasn’t even able to sell it in the end 😀 But at least the bruises I took from the fall reminded me of a great time for some days, back in Germany.
Nur etwa 15 Minuten von dem Studentenwohnheim, in dem ich gelebt habe, war das Paterswoldsemeer mit einer für die Niederlande typischen Windmühle! Ich musste also garnicht weit reisen, um eine der zahlreichen Windmühlen zu sehen. An dem Nachmittag, als wir dort waren, sind wir noch so lange geblieben, bis die Sonne untergegangen ist, was ich glücklicherweise mit meiner Kamera festhalten konnte.
Only about 15 minutes away from the student house, where I lived at, is the ‚Paterswoldsemeer‘ where you can find a typical Dutch wind mill. When we got there in the afternoon, we even stayed until the sunset which was beautiful to look at.
Im zweiten Teil des Throwbacks zeige ich euch ein paar Eindrücke und Erinnerungen von meinen Ausflügen und Städtetrips. Ich bin zwar weniger rumgekommen, als ich mir zu Anfang vorgestellt habe, denn die Uni hat echt viel Zeit eingenommen und Groningen alleine mit all den Leuten, die ich kennengelernt habe war schon ereignisreich; aber jeder einzelne Ausflug bleibt mir deshalb umso mehr in Erinnerung.

Any time soon, I’m going to publish another throwback of my semester abroad to share some of my memories and impressions of the city trips I did. Even though I didn’t travel as much as I expected – because university took much more time than I thought and Groningen itself with all the people was really eventful – I enjoyed every little trip and they’ll remain in my memory even more.

Übrigens, wie ihr seht habe ich mich entschlossen nun auch auf Englisch zu bloggen. Das ist nicht nur für mich eine super Gelegenheit weiterhin mein Englisch zu praktizieren, sondern so können mehr Leute meinen Blog auch lesen. Bisher hat mich aber noch kein Plugin oder ähnliches für Übersetzungen überzeugt, deswegen werde ich das Ganze erstmal so handhaben. Falls ihr eine tolle Funktion kennt, immer her mit den Ideen!
